Your guide to getting the best apps for your money
Want to spend your hard earned cash on some good games for your iphone/ipod touch, that'll keep you hooked for hours? You've come to the right place. In this guide I will state my favourite apps for iphone/ipod touch, including the obvious ones, and some others tht you may have never heard of... hidden gems, so to speak.
DoodleJump
£0.59
Ahh DoodleJump. If you haven't heard of this one, you must've been living under a rock for 3 years. DoodleJump is one of them little mini games that has a really, really simple concept, but is just oh so addictive. The basic aim of the game is to jump as high as you can, landing on little green pads and dodging monsters on the way. It really puts the iPhone/iPod touch's tilt function to good use. If you haven't got this one yet, get it.
Bejeweled 2
£1.79
Bejeweled was first released in 2004 as a browser game and has already got a cult classic status. The simple flick of the gems, lining them up in three's and making the whole board explode with different glittery and colourful patterns is just a delight.
If you are not yet familiar with the concept of Bejeweled, all you have to do is line up 3 of the same coloured gems to get points. I would really recommend the Blitz mode- getting as many points as possible in 1 minute. One thing needs to be said- You will be surprised at how fast your fingers move.
Game Dev. Story
£2.39
You may not have heard of Game Dev Story, but that's fine. Not many people have. Game Dev story is one of my personal favourite games on the iPod touch/iPhone, even though it's not overly recoginised.
The game gives you the role of being a manager of a game making company. The developers give you the chance to be in their shoes, if you like. You have to order your little 8-bit men to work on a new game, or work on a contract to get you some more money. When making the game, you get to decide the games direction, the type and genre, and then your men do all the work, adding sound, graphics, creativity and fun to your game.
Of course you never actually see the created game in action, but you get to watch something much more fun-the sales of that game going up, up, up.
Depict
Free
Depict, to put it into its simplest terms, is online pictionary. The game matches you up with 3 other people, where you have 3 turns trying to guess other peoples drawings first, and then finally getting a turn to draw yourself. The aim of the game is to make as much money as possible and win the game. You can even play with your friends, too.
However, despite the great idea of the game, not many people go on it nowadays, so it can be hard to get matched up with people. Nevertheless, this games worth a look... It is free, after all.
Tiny Wings
£0.59
Tiny Wings is quite new to the app store, and it reached top sales in its first week. It's a great little indie game that'll keep you occupied for about an hour or so. The game is based around a bird with tiny wings (hence the name) that can't fly very well. In fact, the only way he can even get a bit of air is to propelhimself up little hills. What you need to do is help him. When you press the screen, the bird supposedly gets 'heavier' by tucking its wings in. You need to make him heavier as he goes down hills and then release the screen when he's not to help him push himself into the air. I would recommend this, it's good for when your waiting for a bus or some other generic waiting place.
Ninjump
Free
Ninjump is another great hit from Backflip studios- the ones who made Paper toss (another one I would recommend getting, it's free) and Ragdoll Blaster 1 and 2. It's a simple arcade game where you (the ninja) jump from one side of a building to another, trying not to get hit by squirrels, birds and ninjas on the way. And that's really all there is to it. Just try it out, I'll gurantee you'll love it.
Doodle God
£0.59
Ahh, Doodle God. Well this is going to be hard to explain. It is a really strange game, and God knows why it's addictive. Basically, You get given 4 'elements' to begin with- fire, air, water and earth. You then connect two of these elements together- say air and water- and make steam. After that, you can then connect steam with, say, fire to create something else. And then the chain gets longer and longer, and you can make over 140 things all together. As I said before, I have no idea why it's so addictive, all it is is just some pictures on a page that you join together. Nevertheless, get this, It'll keep you hooked for days, probably weeks.
Flight Control
Free
Anyone ever played Harbour Master? Well Flight Control is basically the same, except with planes, and free. If your not familiar with any of these two, the basic aim of the game is to get the right plane to the right runway without making any crash, and that is a lot harder than it sounds. Even though you play from a birds-eye view, the graphics are great and this will keep you hooked for, well, forever.
Rat on a Scooter
£0.59
Rat on a scooter, Donut Games' seventh and, in my opinion, best game. You play a little rat chugging along a moped, jumping across buildings, 2d side-scroller style. You collect cheese on the way, to earn extra points, and also do tricks such as wheelie's or endo's to earn 1 or two points. Gradually, your moped gets faster, making it harder for you to stay on the rooftops of some suburban-looking town. I absolutely love this game, and would recommend it to anyone. The game also comes with different modes with power-ups and stuff. Check it out if you want to.
Honourable mentions and notes
So that's the end of my favourite personal favourite games for iPod touch/iPhone, but I thought I'd mention a couple more that seem to be popular
- Angry birds- You can't find a list of best apps without this, can you? I played angry birds and it really wasn't my thing, but it's obviously popular as it's been at the top of the app store for about a year. It costs £1.19.
- Hubpages app- I know this isn't a game, but I thought I'd mention that if you are a hubpages member, like myself, this is a no-brainer as it's free. It keeps track of al your views and you can approve or deny comments from there, but unfortunately, you can't write hubs as of yet.
Notes:
- All the images on this hub come from google images
- The prices of all apps are subject to change, they could go on sale or increase in price
- £0.59 is $0.99
